CNN —As pro-Palestinian protests have erupted on college campuses nationwide, protesters — including students and faculty — have been arrested. Since then, more than 1,000 people have been arrested on college and university campuses from coast to coast as schools prepare for spring commencement ceremonies. The University of Southern California, where nearly 100 protesters were arrested April 24, canceled its primary commencement event. Protesters have been arrested on more than 25 campuses across at least 21 states. CNN is monitoring campus protests and will continue to update this map with any new arrests.

Nikki Haley still thinks she has a role to play in the Republican primary. Haley told NBC she would stay in the race “as long as we’re competitive” with front-runner former President Donald Trump. A little more than a third of Republican delegates are up for grabs in 15 contests across the country on Super Tuesday. In many of them, Haley could get locked out of delegates entirely if she can’t beat Trump at either the statewide or congressional district level. Haley’s delegate path is full of obstacles unless she can start winning primaries.

CNN —Winning individual primaries and caucuses is just one step in the long path to winning a party’s presidential nomination. Performing well in primaries and caucuses equals delegates, and the larger goal is amassing the magic number of delegates to secure a nomination before delegate voting at the party convention. In 2016, in his first of three White House runs, Donald Trump hit the magic number on May 26. In 13 primaries and three caucuses, 874 delegates, 36% of the Republican total, will be up for grabs, including in California, the state with the most Republican delegates. If there is no clear winner during the primaries, delegates could engage in rounds of voting at the convention to select the party’s presidential candidate.

As of Monday morning, 118 aid trucks with food, water and medical supplies have entered Gaza through the Rafah crossing. The Israel military says there are fuel supplies in Gaza being held by Hamas which are not being distributed for humanitarian purposes, CNN reported. Gaza cannot produce food or clean water without electricity or fuel. The power plant ran out of fuel two weeks ago, and the country has had to rely on generators for electricity. The 140-square-mile enclave, blockaded by Israel since 2007, relies heavily on imported fuel and electricity to run all its services.

The urban area around Gaza City is home to nearly 2 million people living in an 88-square-mile expanse, which is about 21,000 people per square mile, according to data from an annual Demographia report. Demographia looks at the urban footprint of cities to calculate density, as opposed to official administrative boundaries. Within Gaza City, the population density is over 500 people per 100 square meters in many sections, according to data from the European Commission. Population density of built-up urban areasAs of Wednesday, Israel has hit hundreds of targets in Gaza in response to Hamas’ deadly and unprecedented attack early Saturday morning on Israel. While Tel Aviv is less dense than Gaza City, the Jerusalem area has an estimated 21,988 people per square mile, slightly higher than Gaza City’s 21,034.

CNN —As fighting intensifies across Gaza and Israel, CNN is visualizing the war through maps, charts and more. As airstrikes in Gaza have forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes and overwhelm areas, including hospitals, there is little room to go. As thousands of rockets have rained down on Israel, the country has been relying once again on the Iron Dome system to protect its citizens. The US government has spent over $2.9 billion on the Iron Dome program since 2011, according to the Congressional Research Service. Here’s a snapshot of how planned US military aid to Israel compares with other countries.

A government shutdown happens when Congress doesn’t approve funding for the federal government by the time the new fiscal year starts on October 1. What it means for youBecause many federal workers are off the job during a government shutdown, many services are stopped or slowed, disturbing the day-to-day life for many Americans. What it means for government workersWhen a shutdown occurs, millions of federal employees and military service members do not get paid until it ends. During the last government shutdown in 2018-19, an estimated 420,000 federal employees worked without pay and another 380,000 were furloughed. Unlike federal workers, contractors have no guarantee of getting back pay once the government reopens.

Top hourly wage for most of the UAW members at GM, Ford and Stellantis. This was how much wages would have increased over the four-year life of the contract under the union’s initial wage demand. While the union has lowered their wage demands since then, they are still far above the double-digit wage increases being offered by the automakers. The number of UAW members at the three companies: 57,000 at Ford, 46,000 at GM and about 42,000 at Stellantis. Ford was last struck in 1978, when the company had 202,000 union members, or more than now work at the three companies combined.

CNN —Nearly 3,000 people are dead, towns and villages are decimated and rescuers are trawling for survivors after a massive earthquake ripped through Morocco. The quake is the worst the country has suffered in decades and the full scale of its damage is yet to be understood. Friday’s disaster is the deadliest quake to hit Morocco in more than 60 years, according to EM-DAT, an international disaster database. In 1960, a 5.8 magnitude quake in Morocco with an epicenter in Adagir led to at least 12,000 deaths and 25,000 injuries. And in 1980, a 7.1 magnitude ground movement in Algeria followed by a tsunami caused more than 2,600 deaths and huge damage.

The search continues for a minivan-sized submersible, called the Titan, that was carrying five people who were traveling to view the wreckage of the Titanic in the North Atlantic. The vessel lost contact with its mother ship Sunday morning, about 1 hour and 45 minutes into the trip down to nearly 13,000 feet. The Titanic lies around 12,500 feet below sea level. For perspective, the world’s deepest scuba dive reached 1,090 feet in 2022, while the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, would only go down 2,717 feet into the ocean – still roughly 9,700 feet short of reaching the Titanic wreckage. See just how deep the Titanic tourist submersible was headed before it went missing.

Some climate scientists call it the Southern Tornado Alley (STA): An area above the Gulf of Mexico that stretches from the western borders of Arkansas and Louisiana to eastern Georgia, encapsulating Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee in between. But in the Southern Alley, tornadoes are uniquely dangerous and often much more fatal. “The Southern Alley is where you get the human population to meet up with the storms. “Because when it gets down to it, the minutes matter.”Tornadoes that occur in the Southern Tornado Alley are far less predictable than in the Great Plains Tornado Alley, often making them more deadly. “A lot of times people hear Tornado Alley and they just think Kansas.

CNN —A younger Congress may be a thing of the past. Ten years after meeting the age requirement for the Senate, age 30, baby boomers landed four seats, with millennials unable to get a single one. Millennials overtook baby boomers as America’s largest generation in 2020, according to Pew Research. Millennials and Generation Z (11-26) are winning their very first House seats faster than the previous four generations, CNN’s analysis shows. In the Senate, however, it’s taken more than 10 years for both Generation X and millennials to join Congress.
